The basic administrative division of Spain
is the municipality. The municipalities are grouped in 50 provinces and
the provinces in 17 autonomous communities (federal states) and two
autonomous cities. Some autonomous communities have
administrative divisions of its own, with diferent names, formed by
groups of municipalities: Aragon, Catalonia, Galice and Valencia have
"comarcas", the province of Álava municipalities are asociated in
"cuadrillas", Navarra ones in "valles" and "merindades". The
communities of Castilla y Leon and Castilla-La Mancha have not an
oficial division betwen the municipality and the province, but some
municipalities are also asociated in "comarcas". The Canary Islands have also a local council
for each island: the "Cabildo Insular".
